Leaving the Laboratory
Before leaving the laboratory, check to make sure that all of your equipment is clean, and in your
drawer.  All communal equipment must be clean and returned to the designated location in the
laboratory.  As well, before leaving the laboratory, please be sure that the utilities (gas, water, etc.)
are turned off at your laboratory bench.  You should also clean your sink and your work area.  At
the end of the laboratory, you may be assigned part of the laboratory to clean up (fume hoods,
balances, etc.).

ASSESSMENT
The laboratory component of this Chemistry course is compulsory and must be successfully
completed to obtain credit in the course.  A minimum laboratory grade of 50% is required to
pass the laboratory component of the course.  The laboratory grade accounts for 30% of the
course grade in Chemistry 101.
A.
Attendance
Again, attendance of the laboratory sessions is compulsory.  Students must work individually on all
experiments unless otherwise directed.  Punctuality is essential in order to complete the experiments
during the three hour laboratory period.  Students must be in the laboratory for the laboratory
lecture that will begin promptly at the beginning of each laboratory section.  A student arriving more
than 10 minutes late will not be allowed to start the experiment without specific permission from
the laboratory instructor.
There are NO make-up times available for missed experiments.  If a laboratory is missed with a
valid excuse, the mark for this experiment will not be included in the laboratory report average.
Otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned for the missed experiment.
If an experiment is missed for a medical or other significant reason, the instructor must be informed
within 24 hours of the missed laboratory session.  This may be done through voice mail, if
necessary.  If this is not done, you will be assigned a zero for the experiment unless there are
documented extenuating circumstances.
