9.
Always be alert to what is happening around you and to the possibility of an accident by your neighbors.
You could be a victim of someone else’s mistake.  Always advise others of any unsafe practices you
observe.  If necessary, inform your laboratory instructor immediately.
10.
Always maintain an orderly, business-like attitude and a clean, orderly working space.  Careless behavior
or work habits and excessive noise will not be tolerated.
11.
Unauthorized experiments or unauthorized modifications to the experiments in this course are not
permitted.
12.
If you have any doubt about what to do, regardless of the situation or the circumstances, be sure to
consult your laboratory instructor.

Chemicals
1.
All chemicals must be handled with care.  Note any special handling instructions given on the bottle or in
the laboratory manual.
2.
Consider all chemicals to be dangerous (hazardous) unless you are specifically instructed otherwise.
Never taste chemicals or smell gases or vapors directly.  If you are instructed to report the odour of a
chemical, gently waft the vapors toward your nose and smell cautiously.
3.
Chemical reagents are stored in labeled bottles.  Read the label carefully before removing any material.
Do not take more chemical than is required.  Do not, under any circumstances, return unused chemical to
the reagent bottle.  When you have finished, replace the lid on the bottle and immediately clean up any
spilled chemical.
4.
Certain chemical reactions must be carried out in the fume hood.  Watch for instructions in the
experimental procedures and follow them for the safeguard of your health and the health of others.
5.
Bottles containing concentrated acids or bases are stored in the fume hood.  Handle these with care
and do not carry them to your bench.  Spilled acid or base, and rings from acid or base bottles, must be
wiped up immediately.  If a large quantity is spilled, use the HazChem mixture, or sodium hydrogen
carbonate and water to neutralize and clean up.
