GENERAL INFORMATION
I.
LABORATORY AND CHEMICAL SAFETY REGULATIONS
As in all areas of life, there are risks
and hazards involved when working in a chemistry laboratory; however,
these risks can be minimized if safe work
habits are exercised. The chemistry laboratory can be a safe place
in
which to work if appropriate precautions
are taken and a safety conscious attitude is practiced when
working
in the laboratory. You will be expected
therefore, to know and follow the standard safety practices for a
chemistry laboratory listed below.
A. General
1.
Become familiar with the location and use
of all safety and emergency equipment in the laboratory. Your
chemistry laboratory is equipped with the
following safety equipment.
a)
safety shower
b)
eye wash stations
c)
fire extinguishers
d)
first aid kit
e)
fire blanket
2.
Wear the required safety eye protection
in the laboratory at all times. Contact lenses must
not be worn
in the laboratory at any time.
3.
Wear shoes that provide protection to your
feet. Sandals are not to be worn.
4.
Long hair must always
be tied back as it is a serious fire hazard.
5.
Laboratory coats must be worn to provide
protection for your clothing.
6.
Never eat, drink, or smoke in the laboratory.
These activities are strictly prohibited.
7.
Never touch your face or put your hands
near your eyes or mouth unless you are absolutely certain that
there are no chemicals on your hands.
Wash your hands with soap and water frequently and especially
after you complete the laboratory experiments.
8.
Never point a test tube toward yourself
or anyone else. Chemicals undergoing reaction may splatter
over a large area.
