REPORT: EXPERIMENT C - HYDRATES
Name ____________________________________
Section ___________ Date ___________________
Laboratory Instructor________________________
Part I.  Unknown Hydrate
Unknown Code:
1.
Calculate the mass percent of water in the hydrate.  (Remember to use the correct number of
significant figures.)   (2 marks):
NOTE:  Complete this calculation on your Observations Sheet BEFORE leaving the laboratory.
2.
Using the mass of H2O lost, the mass of the anhydrous salt, and the results from the cation and anion
tests, derive the empirical formula of the hydrate. (Include detailed calculations.)
3.
Explain how the experimentally determined empirical formula of your unknown hydrate would vary
from the actual, if you did not heat the hydrate sample to a constant mass.
B.
Compare and explain the observations made when heating copper(II) sulfate and sugar (sucrose), as
well as, the observations for the addition of water to the anhydrous residues of these two compounds.
