Q-12
4.
Shake
1 mL of the diluted iodine solution (specifically
prepared for Part II) with 2 mL of
CH2Cl2 in a small test tube using a green rubber stopper. Note the color of the CH2Cl2 layer and
record your observations.
B. Determination of Relative Reactivities of Halogens and Halides.
1.
Mix 2 mL of chlorine water and 2 mL of 0.10 M KBr. Allow the reaction to proceed for at least
one minute and then add 2 mL of CH2Cl2. Shake gently and observe the color of the CH2Cl2
layer.
2.
Repeat procedure given in Part B.1, combining the following reagents:
a.
2 mL of chlorine water and 2 mL of 0.10 M KI
b.
1 mL of bromine water and 2 mL of 0.10 M KCl
c.
1 mL of bromine water and 2 mL of 0.10 M KI
d.
5 drops of iodine solution and 2 mL of 0.10 M KCl
e.
5 drops of iodine solution and 2 mL of 0.10 M KBr
3.
On your Observations Sheet, record the results for each of the above six reaction combinations and
draw the required conclusions from your results.
Discard all of these solutions from Part II into the Organic Waste container in the fumehood
Before leaving the laboratory, check to make sure that all of your equipment is clean, and in your
drawer. As well, all communal equipment must be clean and returned to the designated location in the
laboratory.
